Namibia will commemorate its 35th National Heroes’ Day on Tuesday, 26 August 2025, at the Katima Mulilo Sports Complex in the Zambezi Region for the first time.
President Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is set to officiate the commemoration ceremony.
Government leaders, liberation struggle veterans, traditional authorities, and the public will gather to honour the sacrifices of the men and women who fought for the country’s independence.
Preparations for the event are being spearheaded by regional stakeholders under the leadership of Zambezi Governor Hon. Dorothy Kabula, with several committees set up to oversee protocol, security, catering, publicity, statistics, and entertainment.

Chairperson of the Information and Publicity Committee, Mr. Alex Sikume told Caprivi Vision that “So far, we have identified the venue, and people are already on the ground at the Katima Mulilo Sports Complex setting up tents, cleaning, and working on electricity and network connectivity to ensure readiness by 26 August” he said
The commemoration will run under the theme “Built on bravery, bound for a prosperous future”, which will serve as the official guiding message for Heroes’ Day over the next five years.
The programme will feature speeches by national leaders, military performances, cultural groups from at least eight regions, and a wreath-laying ceremony in honour of Namibia’s fallen heroes.
Katima Mulilo’s main streets have already been decorated with Namibian and AU flags, creating a festive atmosphere. Essential logistics such as tents and chairs have been secured, while the Namibia Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) and other platforms will provide live coverage through radio, television, and social media in all local languages.
To ensure community participation, buses will transport residents from various constituencies, with schedules to be announced soon.
Recognising the town’s strategic location at Namibia’s borders with Angola, Zambia, and Botswana, organisers have also extended an open invitation to visitors from neighbouring countries to join the commemoration.
Heroes’ Day remains one of Namibia’s most significant public holidays, celebrating the nation’s liberation history while uniting citizens in reflection and inspiring future generations to build on a legacy of bravery, resilience and national pride.
