Zambian President pledges growth, unity and prosperity for 2026–2031

LUSAKA, Zambia — President Hakainde Hichilema and Vice President W.K. Mutale Nalumango have officially been sworn into office for a second five-year term, marking the beginning of Zambia’s 2026–2031 administration.
The two leaders took their oaths of office on Tuesday, 1 September 2026, at the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka, following Hichilema’s victory in the 13 August presidential election.
Hichilema was declared the winner after securing more than half of the valid votes, earning a second mandate under the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND).
The inauguration was attended by thousands of Zambians, regional leaders and international representatives. Presidents from Tanzania, Kenya, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Botswana were among the heads of state attending the ceremony.
During his inaugural address, Hichilema said the focus of his second term would be on moving the country from economic stabilisation towards economic growth, expanded opportunities and improved prosperity for citizens.
The President also called for national unity, extending a hand to political opponents and emphasising that political differences should not divide Zambians.
Hichilema first assumed the presidency in August 2021 after defeating then-President Edgar Lungu. His re-election gives him another five-year mandate to lead the country until 2031.
Vice President Nalumango, who served as Hichilema’s running mate in the election, was also sworn in for another term, formally renewing the leadership partnership at the top of the Zambian government.
The new administration now faces the task of translating its political mandate into tangible improvements in the economy and living standards, with issues including employment, energy, agriculture, investment and economic growth expected to remain central to the government’s agenda.
