A delegation from the Southern African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management (SASSCAL), led by newly appointed Executive Director , Professor Nelago Indongo, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister , Dr. Tjitunga Elijah Ngurare on Monday to discuss climate resilience, scientific collaboration, and food security.
The meeting highlighted the urgent need to strengthen Namibia’s scientific capacity in responding to climate-related challenges, particularly drought, which continues to threaten livelihoods across the country. Discussions also explored the promotion of climate-adaptive agricultural production as a means of supporting farmers while improving local food security.
Professor Indongo outlined SASSCAL’s ongoing programmes and emphasised the importance of partnerships with government institutions in advancing sustainable solutions. Prime Minister Ngurare, who previously served as Deputy Chairman of the SASSCAL Governing Board, welcomed the delegation and commended their efforts in driving regional collaboration on climate research.
The Prime Minister was also briefed on commitments made by SASSCAL Member States to sustain investment in the Centre’s research agenda. Key areas of focus include the development of green hydrogen as a renewable energy source and the rollout of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiatives, particularly in the //Kharas and Hardap Regions.

The visit reaffirmed the strong partnership between government and SASSCAL, with both parties committed to advancing climate research, promoting innovation in agriculture and energy, and enhancing Namibia’s overall resilience to environmental and food security challenges.
