Police Intensify Search for Two Zambezi River Drowning Victims

By Staff Reporter

KATIMA MULILO — The Namibian Police in Katima Mulilo are searching for the bodies of two people who drowned in the Zambezi River on Sunday, August 16, 2026.

According to a police report, a report was received from Nfoma Village in the Imukusi area of the Zambezi Region concerning a canoe that had capsized on the Namibian side of the Zambezi River.

The canoe was carrying seven people, identified as Zambian nationals from Katongo Village in Sesheke District. The group had allegedly crossed illegally into Namibia to attend a burial at Nfoma Village in the Imukusi area.

Five of the passengers managed to swim to the riverbank, while two others remained holding onto the canoe. However, strong winds caused the canoe to drift away, and the two passengers could no longer be seen.

The two missing persons were identified as a 51-year-old Zambian woman and an eight-year-old Zambian boy.

Zambezi Regional Police Commander Commissioner Julia Sakuwa-Neo confirmed that a joint search operation involving authorities from Namibia and Zambia is underway.

As of the latest police report, the bodies of the two victims had not yet been recovered.
