Prime Minister of the Republic of Namibia, Right Hon. Dr. Tjitunga Elijah Ngurare, paid homage to the VaShambyu Community for preserving and promoting Namibia’s cultural heritage during the Vashambyu Vamuturu Wasingangera Cultural Festival held in Kayengona on Saturday July 12, 2025.
Speaking before a crowd of traditional leaders, regional dignitaries, elders, and youth, Dr. Ngurare emphasized the importance of “cultural identity” in nation-building, describing the festival as more than a celebration— “a reaffirmation of unity in diversity and a vital link between generations.”
He commended Hompa Sofia Mundjembwe waKanyetu and the Shambyu Traditional Authority for their exemplary leadership in promoting peace, unity, and development. “Your leadership continues to inspire us all,” he said, referencing the successful resolution of a longstanding succession dispute within the community.

The Prime Minister called on young Namibians to embrace their roots, urging them to learn from elders, participate in traditional ceremonies, and take pride in speaking their local languages. Quoting the founding president, Dr. Sam Nujoma he said, “A nation without culture is like a tree without roots. When the wind blows, it uproots that tree.”
Dr. Ngurare linked the erosion of cultural values to rising social problems such as gender-based violence and baby dumping. “In our culture, babies are not to be dumped, but taken care of,” he said, stressing the role of tradition in shaping moral behavior.

Acknowledging the challenges still faced by rural communities, the Prime Minister reaffirmed government’s commitment to inclusive development, noting that every village should have access to essential services such as clean water, electricity, roads, schools, and clinics.
He also highlighted a major policy announcement, confirming that free education will be implemented from the 2026 academic year, as declared earlier by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.
“Development and tradition are not enemies. They are partners,” he said, advocating for a development model that respects cultural values while embracing progress.
The Prime Minister closed by thanking the festival organizers and cultural performers for their contribution to preserving Namibia’s heritage, wishing the VaShambyu Community continued prosperity and growth.
“Long live the Shambyu Traditional Authority,” he declared in conclusion.
