New Water Security Insights Volume Shifts Africa’s Development Focus

By Staff Reporter

ESI Africa has launched the Water Security Industry Insights Volume on Monday, a 30-page magazine highlighting the urgent need for rethinking water management, financing, and governance across Africa’s development agenda.

The publication underscores that water security is too often viewed through crises such as droughts, contamination, and municipal failures, rather than as the foundation of dignity, resilience, and economic growth.

“Water resources and management cannot be treated as a standalone project, nor as an afterthought in business and public sector departments,” said Nicolette Pombo-van Zyl, Editor-in-Chief of ESI Africa.

She further emphasized that “water underpins energy, agriculture, infrastructure, and climate resilience. When taps run dry, citizens don’t phone ministers; they knock on mayors’ doors. This reality makes cooperation between local, national, and international actors essential.”

The magazine explores issues ranging from governance failures and ecosystem degradation to non-revenue water losses, while also presenting practical solutions. Examples include Nairobi Water’s community-driven initiatives in informal settlements, proving how dignity and affordability can be embedded in service delivery.

With a strong focus on commercial and industrial water needs, the Volume highlights technologies, leadership, and financial models that can create long-term impact. Features include smart water metering, groundwater recharge, integrated urban water planning, and innovations such as converting solid waste into clean water solutions.

By positioning water security at the centre of Africa’s growth, the Insights Volume calls for collective leadership and action. The publication is available online as an interactive flipbook or downloadable PDF, supported by Absa, Conlog, Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa, South African Airways, and the STS Association.
