THE Namibian Government has welcomed the resolution of ceasefire in Gaza , under the adoption of Resolution 2728 by the United Nations Security Council on Monday March 25, 2024.

In a media release statement issued to Caprivi Vision by Ambassador Penda Naanda, Executive Director of the Ministry of International Relations and Cooporation states that the UN resolution demands amongst others, an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during Ramadan and calls for the release of all hostages.

“The adoption of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2728 is a welcome relief for the people of Gaza, who have endured constant bombardment of their homes, schools, hospitals and places of worship, during which thousands of Palestinians have lost their lives.” Explained ambassador Naanda.

Since October 2023,  the ongoing conflict has left about 32,333 people killed, including more than more than 13,000 children and about 8,400 women, while more than 74,694 people were injured including about 8,663 children and 6,327 women.

“In line with the provisions of our Constitution, Namibia has been calling for the settlement of international disputes by peaceful means.”

He however, pointed out that the adoption of the resolution is a step in the right direction to end the sixth-month war, while Namibia continues to encourage a peaceful solution that will not only end in a permanent ceasefire, but also in two states living side by side in peace and security within the pre-1967 borders, and East Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine.

“Namibia calls on the members of the United Nations Security Council to fulfil their obligations and ensure that the UN Security Council Resolution 2728 is implemented without further delay.” He furthers.
