Katima Urban Councillor sworn in as NC MP

Katima Mulilo Urban Constituency Councillor , Hon. Kennedy Simasiku was sworn in as a new member of parliament in the National Council on Wednesday.

He replaced Hon. John Musialela Likando, former National Council member of parliament  and Kabbe South Councillor, who was sworn in by Chief Justice Peter Shivute , on 25 March 2025 as a SWAPO Party new member of the National Assembly(NA) , who was placed on number 52 on the gazetted SWAPO Party list  for the 2024 National Assembly elections . Likando’s swearing in followed the resignation of Hon.Lucia Witbooi from parliament , who was appointed as Vice President of Namibia.

Simasiku’s swearing-in ceremony was presided by Honourable Justice Hosea Angula at the Supreme Court in Windhoek.

Hon. Simasiku has now joined other two regional councillors such as Hon.Bennett Bushihu for Kongola Constituency, who was elected as an independnent Candidate in 2020 and Hon. Mickey Lukaezi, Sibbinda Constituency Councillor under IPC party ticket since 2020.

Zambezi Region is now representated by three (3) regional councilors in the National Council ( Second Parliament) , which literally known as the House of Review.

BACKGROUND

Simasiku  was elected as the Councillor for Katima Mulilo Urban Constituency in  August 2021 By-Elections, after winning 1 557 votes and he replaced late John Mukaya who died on a horrific car accident on 26 May 2021.  

About 14 241 Katima Mulilo residents were registered to vote, among them , a total of 3002 cast their votes, six(6) ballots were rejected.

His contenders  were , Mr. Gibson Kabuna Nkando , an Independent Candidate who obtained 417 votes,  followed by  Ms. Lynnette Malipa of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC)  who got 296 votes, the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM),  Mr. Marklee Matengu received 294 votes, and NDP’s  Mr. Chripher Simasiku scooped 282 votes, and 156 votes were obtained by Mr. Miller Kubwima as an Independent Candidate.
