Katima Mulilo Town Council is in the process of developing the town with its major key infrastructures and a number of mass development projects which will see the town improving drastically. Some of the major achievements are new gestures in the heart of the town which is the erection of the three state of the art traffic lights in Hage Geingob drive found between Matali, Hospital and Lifasi streets.
CVNEWS had a one on one interview with his worship Mayor of the town, Mr.Charles Matengu to get an informed word on the visible developments that has been taking place around the town of Katima Mulilo.
CVNEWS: Honourable Mayor, tell us more on the developments that has been taking place around the town of Katima Mulilo?
Mayor Matengu: Well if you recall on the day I was inaugurated as Mayor, the Five-Year- Strategic Plan for the town was launched, so these developments you are seeing are part of the plan and as you know that Municipalities or Councils are classified, Windhoek, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay are municipalities regarded as being First-Tier Municipalities while our Council is in the third- Tier level so we also want to move up in terms of development.
CVNEWS: Can you tell us about the developments that are currently taking place?
Mayor Matengu: We are going to have Mini-Markets open in areas like Choto, Greenwell Matongo and Cowboy so as to decentralise services. N$126 Million has been reserved for the development of the town, of this amount N$80 Million has been set aside for the mass housing project which will see 326 houses built, another N$3 million is for the 33 houses that are scheduled to be built in Lyambai Location. Another N$7 million is reserved for the construction of a private hospital, which will also include a pathology laboratory.
N$5 million is reserved for the construction of a sewer system for Cowboy Informal settlement, soon another sewer system will be built at that same amount for Choto settlement, a 2 year contract has been signed which will see a number of suburb streets tarred, those will include some in Choto and others and at the moment we are busy with the re-gravelling of some roads. We are hoping that some of these projects are going to be kick-started late in the year or early next year.
We are doing a lot in terms of the fight against the AIDS pandemic as you are aware that our region has the highest number of AIDS cases in the country, UNDP has donated an amount of US$ 40 000 which will be used on collecting data in the region about the scourge of the disease in the region.
About three satellite offices for the Katima Mulilo police are going to be built in Cowboy, Mahohoma and Choto as part of our efforts in the fight against crime in our town and region and we are currently in talks with the Ministry of Education to have more schools built in town.
Petro-Logistics is investing an amount of N$50 million in the building of petrol stations, which will be supplying fuel to government institutions.
CVNEWS: What are you hoping that all of these developments will do for the town?
Mayor Matengu: Well, hopefully this will bring about employment creation and attract investment to our town.
CVNEWS: Your Last word?
Mayor Matengu: We need the support of the community in all of these things we are embarking on, people should pay for their services, lastly I wish all Katima residents a Merry Christmas and prosperous New year ahead.
