Katima Council Donates Land for 187 New Houses

The Katima Mulilo Town Council has donated land for the construction of 187 houses to Shikuh Investments CC, at Cowboy for the higher income earners.

This has come in response to the lack of shelter facing residents of Katima Mulilo, which has also resorted some of the residents grabbing the land without any permission.

In 2014 the Town Council reached an agreement to service and develop the land, and donated it for free to Shikhu Investment CC.

Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr.Patrick Lilungwe alluded that the project was realised to cater for the community of Katima Mulilo under the concept of Public Private Partnership (PPP) “ late in 2014 the Katima Council resolved in its council to enter into a PPP with various companies, and one of them is Shikuh who is here, to build and service extension 21, this land where we are here is extension 21, you can see that it is semi serviced and the rest of the services are going to be put by Shikuh Investments.”

Mr. Lilungwe further explained “Katima Mulilo Town Council has donated this land for free to Shikuh Investments, in return for Shikuh to build houses for our community, most of the houses that are going to be build here, are already having beneficiaries they are 187 houses”

The project is earmarked to be completed in 18 months, after the groundbreaking, which will start with phase 1 for the water reticulation, followed by electrification, and later to finish with phase 3 for the construction of houses.

Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony on Monday, Katima Mulilo Mayor, Ms.Georgina Mwiya assured the residents of the town that her council has identified the lack of decent housing was resolved to allocate the priorities to lower, middle and higher income earners.

“ An expression of interest about 187 Ervin were awarded to Shikuh Investment and which will cater for middle income earners ranging from N$650,000 and the high income group, we have five who will becoming soon”.

Zambezi Regional Governor, Lawrence Sampofu warned the residents of the town to refrain from grabbing the land without permission.

“If you find an empty space in town boundaries its not empty as such, it belongs to the town council and it is already planned for something else, so no one should grab land lets wait, everybody is put on the waiting list so that your chance will come one day, and you will get that plot so let us work together with the town council we don’t want to use the police all the time to remove people from the land where they are grabbing no… lets have that understanding of working together.” Governor Sampofu has said.
