While the nation is mourning the souls of those died and the government on power is putting attest stiffer sentence on gender based violence against women and a girl child perpetuated by men in this country.
Some critics are advocating for the introduction of death penalty as the solution to the problem in a society that has a few population compared to those countries that have imposed death penalty as the sentence.
This is a welcome debate to the general public as this it touches on the protection of the previously neglected members of our society as women were regarded as the most abused in our society.
But we still have to look deeper beyond where we can’t see in what is termed as the causes and impacts of this passion killing, traditionally men are sent to go and fight (wage) war while women were used as caretakers of Children, while in the absolute poverty.
The most important trends of gender based violence are linked in the politics of the household here we talk of bedroom politics, which is food and sex to meet daily needs.
Our eyes are still open, we have seen that, most of the cases of violence are being caused by either a man killing the wife or girl friend after a quarrel of not buying food, spending all monies for beer while at home no food for family, therefore if two partners fail to compromise domestic issues that will bring violence in a home afflicted by unfaithfulness and irresponsible parents with immoral behaviours.
Now that the government is keeping an eye on putting stiffer sentence on gender based violence, should therefore not keep a blind eye to discover and take it seriously that most of the gender based violence are being perpetrated due to alarming poverty, no food no sex vice versa.
Some girl children from the poor homes are being raised in an immoral way and are not taken seriously then they turn into sex work.
Today, when we look into social circle of our society among the black and white community, the rich and the poor, most cases of these types of violence are from the poor black community.
Therefore, the majority poor blacks who elect the government will be definitely be the victims and culprits of those repealed laws and stiffer sentences since they are indirectly dragged into that violence because of erratic poverty.
The lawmakers should be otherwise find ways on how to combat these crimes in this country.
This should not turn into a smear campaign in getting votes ahead of the general elections this year.
With that note we would like to point to it that if this is the case , then let’s bring more women into decision making bodies such as the parliament and cabinet to bring forth solutions to these problems.
Let us not make men as scapegoats of these gender based violence alone…
