THE Annual Zambezi Half Marathon and Fun Walk is glued to kick off July 16, in Katima Mulilo.
This is organized by the Regional Sport office in Katima, Dr. Nhlanhla Mabhena together with Mr. Nyanti, a physio therapist in Katima are the main organizers of the event.
In an interview with Caprivi Vision Sport Mr. Ben Lumponjani said this event started some years ago and described last year’s event which was held on 15 July 2016 to have been nicely organized, close to 200 athletes participated in the competition.
He said the main aim of this event is to keep the community fit and health having funs and making new good friends and prevent people from drinking beers as they keep themselves busy during preparations.
“As we are talking now registration is underway at Riverside Medical Center in town and we are hoping that this year more participants may register. T-shirts, medals, trophy, cool drinks and transport are already with us and prizes are there” He concluded.
Dr.Nhlanhala Mabhena a member of the organizing committee added that whatever sponsorship will be generated this year will be given to the Children of Zion Village, a charity organization situated some 15 kilometers east of Katima Mulilo, Musanga area.
“Last year the little we got we supported social reconstruction in women and child issues especially on gender based violence” Said Dr. Mabhena.
Mr. Oliver Chigariro a social worker at Children of Zion Village and manager for the event confirmed the event to Caprivi Vision saying the budget of all events may go up-to N$56000.00 of which N$ 25000.00 of the cash will be prizes for participants and the remaining N$31000.00 will be for the running of the event.
Prizes will be as follow 21 kilometers both men and women first place will scoop an amount of N$5000 each and gold medals, second place will win N$2500.00 with silver medals while the third winners will walk away with an amount of N$2000.00 and bronze medals.
Five kilometers fun family walk of fun run, first prize in both categories of men and women will be N$200.00, second place N$150.00 and third price will be N$50.00 and all participants will get certificate of participation and t-shirts.
The main sponsors of the event are Coimbra Mega Save, Shakar Supermarket, Zambezi Build it, River Side Medical Center, Caprivi Laboratory, Fashion, K& N Restaurant and Bank Windhoek.
“We have foreign participants who have indicated to come and compete in the event from Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe and so far only 15 people have registered, our registration fees are as follows N$50 for 21 kilometer runners and N$40 for fun family walk or fun running” noted Mr. Chigariro
Meanwhile Zambezi Regional Sports office ordered thirty netballs, thirty soccer balls and twenty volleyballs that will be distributed to all eight constituencies of the region. The balls procured an amount N$ 30 000.00, the aim is to support constituencies of the region and encourage sports especially in remote areas.
“We want people to get involved in different sport activities, these balls will be divided into constituencies and constituency offices will decide on what to do and others might not benefit because they are not thousands”. He furthered.
