Mashi Conservancy game guard arrested two poachers who were found in possession of protected games on Sunday November 12, 2017 during night at Lubuta area some 114 kilometers south- west of Zambezi.
The accused suspect Mr. Likando Beaven Likando (26) was arrested while cooking meat of an animal they killed at his mother’s village (Sicele) by a game guard and Sabo Given Matongo (28) was found walking in gravel road with his friends who ran away and got arrested by special field force and game guard on the same night at around 22H00.
Game guards were tipped by villagers about the incidence leading to the arrest of the suspect persons.
The two were taken to Kongola police station by the ministry of environment and tourism and game guards who arrested them where they spend their night in a charge office till Monday when the case was opened by the ministry and hand them over to the Nampol officers who locked them up in police holding cells of Kongola.
Accused Likando and Matongo made their brief appearance before the Katima Mulilo district court magistrate Ms. Nomusa Khumalo on 14 November 2017 charged with illegal hunting in contravention of official protection. They both pleaded guilty before court.
The suspects illegally hunted and killed a warthog valued at N$ 3000 in Mashi Conservancy. During judgment magistrate Khumalo found accused persons guilty of contravening section 3(1)(a) read with section 1,30(1)(b)(c) 85,89 and 89 A of ordinance 4 of 1975 as amended and gave them an option of paying a fine of N$1000 or three months behind bars.
The accused conducted their own defence.
