Katima Mulilo Town Mayor Hon. Charles Mukaya Matengu has strongly condemned the recent shooting and killing of four ( 4) local residents by a member of the Namibia Defence Force as he warned that the bar (Cheetah) where the incident took place will remain closed indefinitely until further notice.

Honourable Matengu told reporters on Monday that people should remain calm, amid speculation that the killings bring in question on the safety of the town, “first and foremost we as council condemn this unfortunate incident in the strongest terms and we would like to assure the citizens of our town and the Namibian nation at large that the event that took place was an isolated one and our town is still safe and secure”. Said Katima Mayor.
The Mayor explained he had held consultations with the respective heads of the Namibian Security Forces which are the Namibian Police and Namibia Defence Force in the Region and warned that though the shooting was isolated it could affect investors in the town in a negative way.He expressed sympathy by sending condolences to the bereaved families and that the NDF would assist in the funeral costs of the deceased victims.
Meanwhile , In a heinous act of absolute barbarism, an argument over jackpot money led to four people losing their lives and two others being critically injured over the weekend on June 29, at around 1and 2 AM.
A Namibian Defence Force Soldier Mr. Lucas Max (29) allegedly stormed out of the (Cheetahs) night club after he had been in an argument over jackpot money that was apparently won by another individual. It is believed that the individual (whose name could only be established as Mr.Lifasi) had won the money (N$400.00) and stepped to the counter for a moment (to get a beer) and then came back only to find the soldier (Mr.Lucas Max) gambling his money on the jackpot slot machine, when Lifasi approached the soldier and quizzed him why he was helping himself to his money, Mr. Max allegedly became aggressive and began pushing him (Mr.Lifasi).
Mr. Max`s colleague came in and separated the two in which Max turned on his colleague and started hitting him hard, his colleague then instinctly ran away to their room and locked the trunk where they kept firearms and ammunitions, fearing that Max would get hold of the firearms, (the colleague’s actions proved right) as Mr. Max abruptly left the scene (with gruesome intentions) he managed to break open the trunk and got hold of a gun and magazine, moments later gunshots were later heard as the soldier began shooting at random, killing four people instantly and wounding two inside the bar before turning the automatic rifle (AK-47) on himself.
The names of those slain in the shooting are Mr. Frederick Chanda (55) also known as Big Five, Mr. Kawana Sydney(21), Mr. Lubinda Salufu Felix (30), and Mr. Simataa Libuku Michael (50), the two other individuals who were seriously injured are Mr. Albert Simana(30) and a 29- year old Mr. Sikwalyungu Oris Mufalali, they were both transported to Windhoek Central Hospital for further medical attention. While the savivor Mr. Lifasi escaped the incident without any injuries.
However, NAMPOL Public Relations Officer in Katima Mulilo , Sergeant Kisco Sitali told Caprivi Vision that investigations were still going and that an inquest docket had been opened in Mr. Max`s death.
