A 58 year old woman, who narrowly escaped death by a whisker when a bus crashed her leg at the Katima Mulilo open market last month, has now been rendered disabled after she was amputated.
Ms. Dorothy Mashene, a resident of Makanga Village, had her left leg amputated at the Katutura State Hospital on May 21, after she was transferred from Caprivi region, for surgical and medical attention.

The freak accident that attracted hundreds of onlookers, who were grasped in shock, occurred when the bus identified as HAVILAH EXPRESS, was driven at a high speed and entered the market complex.
The old lady who was on her way to the Katima Mulilo referral hospital, which is adjacent from the complex, to collect medications, then panicked in fear when she attempted to cross over the opposite side of the path way.

As a result the bus crushed her left leg after which she was immediately rushed to the hospital where she was later transferred for further medical attention.
According to Astronah Njahi Siyemo, Ms. Mashene’s daughter-in-law- exclusively confirmed to Caprivi Vision, that that the old woman’s left leg was amputated by the medical doctors who decided to cut it off due to the nature of the injuries sustained.
“There was no way other to save her leg other than cutting it off because it was rotting from the inside. She is still suffering in pain as her amputated leg occasionally bleeds when it is dressed.”
On other occasion one can see that she is ok but other times she is not as she cries and does not want to eat.

Mr. Calvin Lisulo, an eye witness at the scene, said the bus had turned in from the three way stop before turning into the direction of the market complex.
“I saw the bus coming from the three way stop, into hospital road before it turned to the market at a high speed. The old woman (Mashene) was about to cross but came to a standstill in confusion before the bus hit her” he said.

Another eyewitness fumed saying that “The driver was negligent as he drove at a high speed in a non public road. if he was cautious and slow the accident would not have happened” said the eye witnesses.
Ms. Mashene’s son, Mr. Diaz Lubinda, echoed that he too was left in shock over the incident when he learnt of his mother’s fate.
“I was on my way to work at the nearby supermarket when I learned of the accident. I was left shocked when I was informed that it was my mother who had been crushed by a bus at the market.
I felt very bad looking at my mother laying on the ground in pain with a severed leg” said Mr. Lubasi.
