After more than a decade of performing across Africa, Europe, and the Americas, internationally acclaimed Namibian musician Riaan Smit has returned home to Swakopmund to raise his daughter, mentor young artists, and rejuvenate Namibia’s music industry.
Known for his distinctive Afro-Gypsy Blues style a fusion of African rhythm, gypsy swing, and soulful blues Smit has built a global following through his magnetic performances and creative versatility. As the front man of the celebrated band Crimson House, he has headlined some of the biggest music festivals in Southern Africa, including Oppikoppi, Rocking the Daisies, Splashy Fen, and the iconic Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts in Cape Town.
These milestones have earned Smit recognition as one of the few Namibian artists to have graced such prestigious stages, making him a pioneer of Namibian representation in international music circles. His tours have taken him from the Caribbean to the United States and throughout Africa, captivating audiences with his unique sound and vibrant storytelling.
Speaking about his decision to return home, Smit said Namibia has always been at the center of his heart. “I still tour internationally to massive audiences, but Swakopmund is where I belong. It’s where I want to raise my daughter and build something lasting not just for myself, but for the community that raised me.”
Earlier this year, Smit spent time in Cape Town collaborating with South African musicians, exploring new creative directions, and performing at various venues. However, the experience reaffirmed what he had always known that Namibia is where his inspiration truly thrives.
