Namibian Prime Minister Dr. Tjitunga Elijah Ngurare, on Thursday in Tsumeb, called for intensified cancer research in Namibia to boost treatment capacity by urging institutions to develop cures and strengthen palliative care services.

Prime Minister Ngurare made the call during the launch of the Cancer Awareness and Palliative Care Advocacy Day in the Oshikoto Region.

He emphasized that Namibia must invest in home-grown research capable of producing long-term solutions to the country’s rising cancer burden.

He noted that researchers, universities, and health institutions hold a critical responsibility in driving scientific breakthroughs that can lead to locally relevant cancer treatments.

Dr. Ngurare stressed that cancer remains a major public health challenge and requires innovative, collaborative, and well-resourced research efforts.

The Premier also revealed that the government is making significant progress toward improving national palliative care services. He announced that a National Palliative Care Policy is being developed in partnership with the University of Namibia (UNAM).

A National Palliative Care Task Force has already been established to guide this work.

Additionally, palliative care has been integrated into the curricula at UNAM and the Namibia Health Training College, a move expected to strengthen the country’s healthcare workforce and improve the quality of care for cancer patients.

Dr. Ngurare added that the combination of research, education, and policy development is central to improving cancer outcomes, ensuring access to proper care, and building a resilient health system.

In conclusion, the Prime Minister’s remarks reinforced Namibia’s commitment to advancing cancer research, strengthening palliative care, and empowering institutions to develop local solutions that improve the overall well-being of affected citizens.
