Namibia Health Plan announced in Windhoek on Wednesday that it is strengthening preventative healthcare programmes. These programs will help members detect illnesses early. They aim to improve wellbeing by promoting screenings, education, and health risk management nationwide.

Namibia Health Plan (NHP) is the largest medical aid fund in Namibia. It has reaffirmed its commitment to preventative healthcare. This effort is part of a broader strategy aimed at protecting member wellbeing. It also helps in reducing the burden of serious illnesses.

NHP Principal Officer Ms Dantago Garosas spoke during a media engagement in Windhoek. She explained that the fund wants to move beyond its traditional role of simply paying medical claims. Instead, the organisation is focusing on early detection. It also conducts health risk assessments. They promote wellness education. Prompt interventions are made to help members keep healthier lives.

Ms Garosas said, preventative healthcare is essential for the long-term sustainability of the fund. It is also crucial for improving the quality of life of its members. She nevertheless added that encouraging healthier lifestyles is important. Regular screenings can prevent minor health issues from developing into severe and costly medical conditions.

“As Namibia’s largest medical aid fund, we understand that our role goes beyond funding treatment. We must also help lead the conversation on prevention, early detection and healthier living. Our responsibility is not only to process claims when members are unwell, but to support them in staying well for longer. This is better for our members, better for employers, and essential for the long-term sustainability of the Fund.” She explained.

NHP’s preventative healthcare initiatives include targeted health screenings, chronic disease support programmes, mental health initiatives and workplace wellness interventions. The programmes are designed to help members detect potential health risks early and take action before conditions worsen.

The fund also emphasised the growing challenge of non-communicable diseases in Namibia, including hypertension, diabetes, cancers and mental health conditions.

According to NHP, early diagnosis and treatment can significantly reduce complications and healthcare costs for both individuals and employers.

NHP has partnered with Mr Tangeni Amupadhi as part of its awareness efforts. He is the former editor of The Namibian Newspaper and a prostate cancer survivor. They aim to promote open conversations about men’s health and encourage early screening.

Mr Amupadhi said his involvement is motivated by the need to turn personal experience into public awareness. He noted that prostate cancer has become one of the leading cancers in the country. This information comes from the Cancer Association of Namibia.

“I decided to start spreading awareness because, in the year I was treated, the Cancer Association of Namibia declared that prostate cancer had become the leading cancer in Namibia. In general, cancers are spreading rapidly, which is why we need to continue sharing these messages and creating awareness about early detection before the condition worsens or before someone becomes bedridden,” said Mr Amupadhi.

NHP also called on the media to support preventative healthcare initiatives. Media should share correct health information. This can help reduce stigma. It encourages the public to seek medical screening early.

Namibia Health Plan aims to strengthen a national culture of preventative healthcare through expanded wellness programmes, awareness campaigns, and partnerships. This approach helps members stay healthier for longer. It also reduces the impact of serious diseases across the country.
