The Ministry of Urban and Rural Development has provided N$146 million to the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia to address the housing needs of low-income earners across the country.
Urban and Rural Development Minister Sankwasa James Sankwasa disclosed the funding during a one-on-one performance review with Prime Minister Dr Tjitunga Elijah Ngurare in Windhoek on Thursday.
1,864 Houses Completed
Sankwasa said the ministry had facilitated the completion of approximately 1,864 houses countrywide during the period under review. It had also supported the construction of 250 sanitation facilities in rural areas as part of Government’s efforts to improve living conditions and access to basic services.
He said the ministry remained committed to inclusive urban and rural development, with a focus on accelerating land delivery, housing, sanitation, decentralisation and local economic development.
Sankwasa added that the initiatives aim to improve communities’ quality of life, address infrastructure gaps and ensure development reaches people in both urban and rural areas.
Housing Remains a Government Priority
Ngurare commended the ministry’s efforts to address the country’s housing challenges and improve access to decent housing and basic services.
He said housing remained a key priority of the 8th Administration, and stressed the importance of ensuring that Namibians—particularly low-income households—could access decent, safe and affordable homes.

The Prime Minister added that Government would continue to prioritise initiatives that respond to the housing needs of ordinary Namibians and strengthen collaboration among Government, communities and other stakeholders to accelerate housing delivery nationwide.
