THOUSANDS of mourners gathered at the Parliament Buildings in Nairobi on Friday to pay their last respects to former Prime Minister and veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga, whose body lay in state ahead of his final journey home.
Odinga, aged 80, passed away from heart attack on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, while receiving medical treatment in India. President William Ruto and other national leaders attended the ceremony, hailing him as “a national treasure, a patriot, and one of the greatest architects of modern Kenya.”
A state funeral service has been held at Nyayo National Stadium on Friday, October 17, 2025, followed by a public viewing at Moi Stadium in Kisumu on Saturday, October 18, 2025.
Odinga will be laid to rest on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at Kango Ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County, according to his wish to be buried 72 hours after his death.
Late Raila Amolo Odinga, born on 7 January 1945 , he was a Kenyan politician who served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013.
The Kenyan government has declared a seven-day national mourning period, with flags flying at half-mast across the country. World leaders, including Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, paid tribute to Odinga’s enduring legacy as a champion of democracy and social justice.
