WORD ON STREETS OF KATIMA MULILO AFTER THE REGIONAL AND LOCAL AUTHORITY ELECTIONS THAT WAS HELD ON NOVEMBER 2010

The Caprivi Vision Senior Journalist Simon Liseli and Given Samulandela (a Polytechnic student attached with the Caprivi Vision newspaper) took to the streets of Katima Mulilo with the questions, did you vote for Regional and Local Authority Elections on 26 – 27 November 2010 and what do you expect from the Councillors you elected?

Mr. Samahili Molopo Lucious a 52 year old working for the Ministry of Defence had this comments; “I didn’t vote because since I started voting in 1989 I don’t see any change or development, now we are talking of 20 years after Independence but when you look at roads, hospitals to mention a few they are very poor so I urge new Councillors to bring developments and to create jobs for the youth not just to feed themselves forgetting the people who voted for them, their promises should be fulfilled,”

Mabuna Elsa, a 22 years old youth and unemployed said, “ I did not vote because I don’t see any change, we are just in villages because we do not have jobs, our new councilors should create jobs for us by bringing projects for the youth and we need to see development in our region,”

Mazozi Margaret a 47 years old lady who is living by selling Mangos, tomatoes, Fried ground nuts and Onions to sustain her family had this to say; “ I voted with the aim that my voice should be heard when ever I ask or worried about something, those leaders we voted for should understand us as voters, they should look at the life we are living, lots of youth with grade 12 certificate and some are even having diplomas but are not getting jobs so I am calling on the new councilors that we have just voted for last month to bring some projects to the people because unemployment is high and I’m asking our newly elected councilors to be meeting their people and listen to their concerns and they must make sure that people are under their control,”

Mukanwa Carol who declined to give her age and unemployed had this to say, “I didn’t vote because my views are not counted, people are voting but we don’t see some changes, no work for us but we just continue suffering, new councilors should make some changes, we are applying for jobs but our applications are not even answered,we want changes for the better, our infrastructures are very poor and many youth are just in villages without work,”

Shantel Matengu a 20 year old and unemployed said, “ I didn’t vote because we are not recognized , especially to the people we are voting for, after voting for them they forget us, most of the youth are just in villages suffering, no job for them. Councilors who were elected should create employment for us and develop this region,”

Mumbone Kuzeni a 28 year old
youth without a job said this, “ I casted my vote on the 26 – 27 November 2010 as every body has that right to cast his or her vote, now the councilors we voted for must make changes, we need development and they should bring us some projects that will give us work, people are stealing because of not working and if you take a statistic now you will find that girls are getting pregnant because of suffering, our councilors should do something and they are the people who can unite people of this region,”
