THE ruling South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) party will celebrate its 59th anniversary birthday in Katima from June 7, 2019.
The event will begin on the 7th of June running to the main celebration day which is slated for Saturday June 8, 2019 when the SWAPO party President and the current Namibian Head of State Dr. Hage Geingob will address the nation at Katima Mulilo Sport Complex.
Earlier the event was schedule from the 29th of May to 1 June 2019 but it was changed to above dates due to the state funeral of the late Dr. Nicky Iyambo, former Vice President of Namibia.This was confirmed by the SWAPO Party Zambezi Regional Coordinator Mr. Moffati Sileze.
In an interview with, Executive Director of SWAPO party Mr. Austin Samupwa divulged that the celebration maybe bigger than the past birthdays as the party turns 59 years and hosted in the great region of the mighty Zambezi where SWAPO PLAN fighters began to force enemy forces to be humble where most battles of the Namibian heroes such as the late Plan combatant Tobias Hainyeko was killed during a combat.

“He died here because the struggle weaved here and we all know this history and I want to assure the nation that residents of Zambezi, SWAPO party members, sympathisers and all supporters are ready to go to Katima Sport Complex to receive their president Dr. Hage Geingob and all other leaders who will be here” noted Samupwa.
The party was founded on 19 April 1960, and turned 59 years of age on 19 April 2019 but because of other activities that took place it was shifted to 8 June 2019 and leaders decided that the celebration will be in Zambezi Region in Katima Mulilo town and last year it was held in Mariental town of the Hardap Region.
“This year the whole leadership of the party will be in Zambezi to celebrate the SWAPO party birthday” said comrade Samupwa.
He said the aim is to remind the old and new generation that the Namibian people were suppressed by the foreign colonial countries such as South Africa, German and Britain while at the time came a movement that united all the people of Namibia under one banner in the leadership of comrade Sam Nujoma who united all to form a resistance against foreign occupation of Namibia.
“This party has an impact from the time it was formed in 1960; they are those who were operating in exile and some inside the country to put pressure on the regime that was here for Namibia to be independent”Samupwa added that the celebration is also aimed to remind Namibian people that SWAPO party was one day born and continued until it liberated Namibia and to insure that Namibians are liberated economically.
He encouraged all political regions of Namibia to arrange their own transport individually or in groups to come to Zambezi for the celebration.
Sport Complex will be opened to SWAPO party members who own small and medium enterprises who will be allowed to make stands inside the stadium where they will sale their items.
Live concerts staged by famous musical artists will entertain members while enjoying and listening to messages from leaders. Each night they will be live concerts and braai where everyone is invited to come to the event that will be in Katima for the first time.
SWAPO executive Director further said that at the end of the celebration, they will be football, netball and volleyball tournament that will bring people together under SWAPO banner for the party to motivate and have the spirit of unity.
Mr. Samupwa is a young vibrant politician who served as a Director of Education in Zambezi Region while at the same time he was a Regional Mobiliser for SWAPO before he was promoted to the high office at the SWAPO Headquarter in Windhoek where he is currently appointed as the Executive Director of the SWAPO Party.
This year Namibians will go for the polls in November to elect the President and National Assembly representatives.
