Namwater Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Abraham Nehemia has inaugurated raw water pipeline in Katima Mulilo on Tuesday.
The new raw water pipelines replaced the old pipelines which were constructed 45 years ago in 1979, which often managed to supply water to a total number of eight thousand (8000) people in Zambezi region.
While this new pipeline known as the High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) type consists of a carrying capacity of 650mm in diameter , and is expected to stay longer than 50 to 100 years compared to the old pipeline.
At the ceremony Namwater CEO, Mr. Abraham Nehemia spoke much on the importance of the project and water saying that the project is not only an enhancement to the country’s infrastructure but also a renewed commitment to delivering reliable water to the people of Katima Mulilo and the surrounding areas.
“Last year I was here and we did ground-breaking and we promised that the construction work will be completed soon, today we are back to demonstrate that we have stood by our promise and with a mission to modernise the critical infrastructure by the Zambezi region and country at large”Nehemia explained.
He encouraged the Zambezi residents to be able to treat the water put in those pipelines because the water comes straight as raw water from the river and must be treated before consumed.
“We are really seriously looking into the development of modern conversion treatment plant that will be fed by this pipeline to ensure that treated water is available including all hotel and lodges so that when visitors come can drink water from the tape, this is the land of the brave” he stressed
NamWater had directly funded the raw water pipeline project spending about N$10 million dollars with the support of the government and the Namwater’s own budget financed from their own sources.
Water is not just a basic need but it is also a characteristic for growth and it plays an important role in the country’s development and for this people must know that there’s limited water which need to be taken care of.
“I also want to announce that the design and construction of this project was completed by NamWater engineers our own people, the Ndakalimwe Investments” he said.
Mr. Nehemia asked all the residents of Zambezi region to protect and take care of the infrastructures (pipelines) for their own use instead of breaking them thinking that it is the government’s property.
He further thanked the community for the cooperation they have showed during the project.
