NA elects out-going Namibian Prime Minister as Speaker

THE 8th National Assembly of Namibia has elected the out-going Namibian Prime Minister , Dr. Saara Kuugongelwa – Amadhila as the speaker of the National Assembly.

Honourable Dr.Kuugongelwa – Amadhila  is  the new first female Speaker of the National Assembly , who succeeded Prof. Peter Katjavivi  on Thursday.

SWAPO’s Secretary General, Sophia Shaningwa nominated Saara to be the Speaker , and She accepted the nomination, and contested the position with the leader of the Landless People’s Movement ,  Bernardus Swartbooi and won 55 votes against 40 votes of Hon. Swaartbooi .

Kuugongelwa-Amadhila served as Director General for National Planning Commission and Minister of Finance.

Late former Namibian President , Dr. Hage Geingob appointed her as the first female Prime Minister since  2015.

However, Hon. Philipus Katamelo of the SWAPO Party was elected Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, winning 54 votes , while former leader of the official opposition Party PDM, McHenry Venaani got 41 votes.
