THE Roads Authority (RA) , has started bringing new infrastructures by connecting the rural community feeder roads to the national road network as a new chapter of connectivity, opportunity and progress for all.
With the recent dawn of ground-breaking for the construction of the Makanga and Masida access roads in Linyanti Constituency in Zambezi Region, this is an important milestone marking the beginning of a construction project, it is the start of a new chapter for our rural communities.
“Our rural areas are the heart and soul of our nation. They are where the roots of our heritage grow strong and where the potential of our future lies. Yet, for too long, the communities in these areas have faced challenges of isolation and lack of infrastructure, limiting their potential to fully contribute to the nation’s growth. That changes today.” Says Deputy Prime Minister of Namibia, and Minister of Works and Transport, Hon. John Mutorwa.
In 2013, the Government of the Republic of Namibia through the Ministry of Works and Transport decided to address challenges with regards to providing access to schools and clinics by creating a nationwide programme called Construction of Access Roads to Schools and Clinics.
In response to the nationwide programme, the Ministry of Works and Transport through the Ministry of Finance and the National Planning Commission (NPC) approved a vote and budget appropriations to deliberately embark on the programme of improving access to schools and clinics nationwide.
However, Roads Authority has made significant strides with the construction of access roads to schools and clinics to improve accessibility, mobility and timely service delivery of public services.
The rural access roads programme for Makanga and Masida Settlements involves the construction of gravel access roads to schools and clinics of District Road 3562 connecting to Makanga, which is approximately 3.54 kilometres long and District Road 3525, connecting to Masida which is 3.04 kilometres, which brings the total length of 6.58 kilometres. Both access roads commence at the intersection with TR 8/6: Kongola, Katima Mulilo.
This project is fully funded by the Government of the Republic of Namibia at a total cost of approximately N$11.5 million, the project will create about 100 jobs at peak production.
The Contractor of the project is Odjove Trading and Construction CC, a Namibian Contractor, the consultant is Tulipamwe Consulting Engineers (PTY) LTD and the overall supervision will be done by the Roads Authority. The project will be constructed over 5 months.
These roads will serve as arteries of opportunity, linking farmers to markets, students to schools, patients to healthcare, and families to one another.
Groundbreaking Ceremony of Nakabolelwa-Mbalasinte – Kasika Road DR 3524- PHASE 2 in Zambezi region.
In the eastern flood plains of the Zambezi Region the construction of the flood plains road has been allocated the tune of N$500 million due to its geographical settings, and this will need more bridges and 115 culverts.
The Nakabolelwa-Mbalasinte and Kasika roads are part of phase two of the Izimwe Nakabolelwa road which was constructed in the past years and is earmarked to be constructed to a low volume seal bitumen standard.
The project is expected to start with the major bridges and culverts and this will be constructed for over a period of eight months.
Hon. Mutorwa emphasised that “The project is divided into two phases, phase number one is from Izimwe to Nakabolelwa, which was completed already, as I am told there is a gravel road. Now today what brought us here is to bear witness to the commencement of phase number two of this road, which will start again in Nakabolelwa through Invilinvizi and Mbalasinte up to Kasika. It is estimated that the length of the road is 33.4 km.”
Ondjove Construction Company and Tulipamwe consultants will also construct the Nakabolelwa-Mbalasinte and Kasika flood plain road.
According to Roads Authority Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Conrad Lutombi the new state- of -the art will end challenges faced by the residents of the flood-prone areas, as the they will have easy access to their villages and government service program activities without using boats and canoes.
Dr. Lutombi further divulged that the upgrading of the Bukalo-Muyako-Ngoma Road to bitumen standard will follow suit to bring development to the residents of Muyako and neighbouring villages.
